STATE OF THE ARTS
By Michelle Williams / Executive Director

Even when disaster strikes, it is music, drawing and storytelling that makes them feel like they'll find home again Regeneration By Kristine

With the twin monster storms Katrina and Rita wreaking havoc on large swaths of the Gulf Coast, it's hard sometimes to figure out what is important. When there is loss of life, catastrophic damage, people displaced, children separated from their parents, when the elderly and infirm find themselves deathly afraid, when all the systems break down that are supposed to prevent massive disasters, how do we go on with the normal rituals of our daily lives? How do we decide what is worthy of concern? What actually matters? When things are this terrible for so many people, who has the time to care about, for instance, the arts?

When hundreds of thousands of people have been shipped far from their communities to start over in unfamiliar terrain, when hundreds of thousands still sleep on cots in shelters, when so many people still have limited access to food and safe water, why should we care about the arts? Who, in these times, do we choose to support: our fellow citizens thousands of miles away, or our neighbors and organizations here at home?

The answer is simple: both.

In the aftermath of Katrina, a number of relief workers got together and brought art supplies to a shelter in Louisiana. There, lost children who hadn't seen their parents in weeks expressed their grief through crayons and construction paper. Scribbled pictures of moms and dads and brothers and sisters, and homes that no longer stood, emerged from tiny fingers grateful for something familiar, something to do. 24 hours before Rita made landfall, a bus in Texas filled with elderly men and women was serenaded by a Red Cross volunteer, who quieted their moans and cries by singing a soulful song about being far from home.

Even when the federal government devalues the arts, when state funding is slashed, when the arts are treated as disposable by schools desperate to get better test scores, the arts are still here, still the outlet, still the unifying means of expression for all of us. Even when disaster strikes, when people lose their homes, their jobs, even their loved ones, it is music and drawing and storytelling that makes them feel like someday, they'll find home again.

It is important that each of us do what we can to help the victims of these terrible storms. Donating money to the Red Cross, donating goods to the Salvation Army, and volunteering for either organization are excellent ways to contribute- and some of the best ways for us to heal our own hearts as well. But it is also important to remember that there is much work to be done here at home. Donate to these important relief organizations, but don't cut out the support you also give here. Go to a play. Sit in an audience of live theater and just be with a few hundred of your neighbors. Go to a local gallery and see the work being created right here in Napa. Remember that when you support your local arts organizations, when you encourage a creative life in both the young and the old, you give your community access to that which unifies us, brings us together, and gives us a sense of place, of home. For just a few minutes, through crayon and song, those children in Louisiana and those elderly in Texas were given a moment of peace. Those children and elderly need our help and support, as do all the displaced people all along the Gulf Coast. Help them, but don't forget how important you are to your own community. Don't forget to also make a difference here at home.

Art For Your Business: Revolving Door Art Art installation in corporate environment

Are you looking for art for your business, winery, or non-profit? Are you interested in supporting Napa Valley's thriving, diverse local arts scene? Revolving Door Art, a new ACNV program, is for you. This program supports both local organizations and local artists, by providing organizations with beautiful art, and providing artists with expanded exposure to local and tourist art patrons.

Through Revolving Door Art, you can book local artists that compliment your organization in a series of rotating exhibits. You can work with a single artist or a number of artists who will create an exhibit that enhances your organization and highlights your support of Napa Valley art. ACNV staff will help customize a program that is appropriate for you, tailoring the media and tone to support the image and feel of your organization. This is an exciting opportunity to partner Napa Valley wineries, businesses and non-profits with the diverse artistic talents in Napa's creative community. We invite you to explore this program, and to discover the immense talent within our valley. How does it work?

How does it work?

1. Contact ACNV at 257-2117 or [acnvartscouncilnapavalley.org] to set up a meeting with ACNV staff to discuss program fees and your art needs: how much space do you have? Do you want 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional art? What sort of medium and tone would be appropriate for your place of business?

2. Work with ACNV staff to create your program. Do you want to book one or more artists? Do you want a rotating exhibit, with new art every 1-3 months, or do you want to choose an artist-in-residence for a year?

3. Using the online Artist Registry, ACNV staff will help you identify artists whose work is compatible with your needs.

4. Arrange a site visit with your artists and ACNV staff.

5. Work with the artists to create the display, and consider having an opening event to highlight your support of local arts!

For more information, please contact ACNV at 257-2117 or [Email Us]. [Information Online].

Treasure Found at Napa Salvation Army

P. Toft Watercolor Landscape of Barkerville, British Columbia

"Nope, Doesn't Happen to Me"

Rummaging through stacks of tacky art and battered frames in a bin at the local Napa Salvation Army on December 29th, 2004, Karol and her daughter Kristine Cummins found a battered, framed picture of an old town. Looking closely, it appeared to be a watercolor, but they weren't sure if it was an original. They were not looking for paintings of old towns. Rather they hoped to find "sailing art" for a home grown "While You Were Out" decorating session at Kristine's brother John's house. John was happily driving down to Baja with his son, while mom and daughter were creating a mischievous decorating upgrade for their bachelor son and brother. Karol and Kristine thought that the painting could possibly be a nice addition, so they brought it home. Heck, it only cost a whopping two dollars and fifty cents - so the seasoned shoppers with artful eyes thought they had nothing to lose.

The shoppers' curiosity got the best of them. Recognizing that the painting may render a real place in time, they wondered where that place might be, and what window of history did it reveal? So, the two shoppers carefully dismantled the paper and wood backing of the painting, as if they were doing precision surgery. They pulled out the matted art preserved behind glass. The sleuths closely inspected the 5 3/4" x 8 3/4" painting, and confirmed that it was an original watercolor because some of the pigmentation shown signs of deterioration. Karol and Kris instantly recognized that this painting was not an ordinary find of trivial wall art. Their intuition about the painting was on the way to being confirmed.

A faint cursive graphite handwriting on the back of the painting stated, "View of Barker's claim and town from the Canadian cabin. Drawn by P. Toft, Cariboo 1863". And text on the painting's wooden-backing stated, "Cariboo British Colombia, Barker Claim, Barkerville, Williams Creek #25."

View of Barker's claim and town from the Canadian cabin. Drawn by P. Toft, Cariboo 1863

Well, these new clues piqued their curiosity even more. And, as two skilled bargain shoppers, Karol and Kristine also wondered if they had stumbled upon a piece of art of much greater value than its purchase price. Thinking, "Nope, it doesn't happen to me, I have never yet found the Antiques Roadshow gold mine," the two stared at the revealed painting with a sense of surprise and asked each other, "What do we do with it now?" Having found an original painting over one hundred and fifty years old, they knew it must have been worth something!

Dutch Artist Sailed His Way to San Francisco

Daughter Kristine disappeared to her computer and dug up bits of gold. She turned up a few facts about the artist, P. Toft, that made the painting even more fascinating.

P. Toft was born in Kolding, Denmark in 1825, and studied illustration and painting techniques during his youth in Copenhagen. P. Toft became an itinerant artist who was known for landscapes, genre depictions, topographical and architectural watercolors. At the age of 25, he sailed aboard the ship, "Ohio" and arrived in San Francisco in 1850.

While living in the US, Toft became one of the first illustrators for Harper's magazine, and lived and worked in New York, Washington, Montana, and finally British Columbia- and the painting confirmed that he visited the small British Columbian gold rush town of Barkerville in 1863.

In 1868, at the age of 43, Toft returned to Denmark, and finally settled in London where he exhibited at the Royal Society every year until 1885. In 1901, at the age of 76, Toft's life ended in London, England.

Curious about the subject of their Toft painting, the town of Barkerville, Kristine found a website about the town (www.barkerville.com). Kristine learned that tourism is Barkerville's economic base, and the town is much like Columbia, California and Virginia City, Nevada. She contacted Barkerville officials through the town website, and let them know she had found a little masterpiece paining of their gold rush town. Days later, William Quackenbush, Historian and Curator of the Barkerville museum, wrote back, intrigued by the find of the painting.

Making Its Way Home

Even though Quackenbush had not personally seen their Toft painting, he was convinced that it was authentic judging from the year it was painted and the accurate depiction of the town of that time. Mr. Quackenbush added that the painting would be a valuable addition to the collections of Barkerville - words Karol and Kristine had hoped to hear. Karol and Kristine shipped the Toft Barkerville landscape painting directly to Mr. Quackenbush and his colleagues for evaluation. On March 18, 2005, the town of Barkerville officially adopted the painting that was worth $1,510 U.S. dollars ($1,841 Canadian) according to Christie auctions. Mr. Quackenbush was able to acquire $1,000 Canadian dollars from the government and a deal was struck. Quackenbush also invited Karol and Kristine to stand in the very location Toft did as he painted the landscape. Along with rare Toft paintings at the Oakland Museum and the Montana Historical Society, one now rests in the small town of Barkerville, British Columbia.

POETRY & POSTSCRIPTS
Mary Shea / Editor
Mary Shea, Postscripts Editor
Letter From the Editor:

The grapes are finally being picked, so pluck those poems from your brains or files and send them in! They say that in spring a young man's (or young woman's) fancy turns to love and other distractions, but this is fall, so what's your excuse for not writing great poems and risking a submission? Summer vacation is over. The days are getting shorter, so the nights are lengthening and that gives you more time for writing. You can only watch so much football., so...? Yours, Mary Shea

Force of Nature

Put your hand upon my head
and tell me what I'm thinking
Put your hand upon my heart
and tell me what I'm feeling
Your touch has healed me
many times before
like the waves that crash
on the seashore
creating newness on the face
of the waters edge
So much sifting in the
shallowness
Bringing substance to the surface
for which the gull will feed
Your hand upon my soul
is what I need
It's all so simple when you
say it, so hard to do
when you walk out in the ocean
the forces that oppose you
oh the forces that oppose you
are the same that change you
the forces that oppose you
how they will consume you

        --James Curt Byrum

First

The long torso on the bed,
limbs of the beloved, first
flesh of fall, the one who changed
the summer's heat
to breeze as we slept naked
in the car like an orb
because we were
young and homeless. Flesh
now fifty, still faithful
as the good god in the waiting room
of heaven, face I pray to
and am ashamed,
always asking for more,
never thankful enough, dedicated
savior, husband who rises
and makes coffee, then
drives to work, steady
as the smell of abundance
on my forehead as I lie there
thinking if only
that mortal man could return
early, and twist time
back like a key, back decades ago to the
beginning of the day
he found me.

        --Leonore Wilson
