STATE OF THE ARTS
By Michelle Williams / Executive Director
Michelle Williams - Photo by fellow Napa Valley artist, Caetlynn Booth
"This year, I encourage you to forgo the sweater, forgo the gadgets, and turn to gifts that fill the soul" Give the gift of arts in Napa Valley

The other morning on the local news, the newscasters were conducting a poll: had the holiday shopping season started too early this year? To participate, you were to send a "text message" via cell phone to the news station: the letter "y" if yes; if no, the letter "n". Now I do not believe this poll to be particularly newsworthy, although in comparison to some of the banal topics they poll on a daily basis, this was almost racy. I did not stick around to see the final results, but as I made my way out the door, 96% of viewers were saying "yes", that the season started too early. And yet, shoppers were already out in record numbers weeks before the traditional day-after-Thanksgiving shopping kick-off. So, even though we may feel it's all starting too soon in the season, we are complicit in this shift.

But don't we hear this every year? Christmas decorations now boot out the Halloween candy in stores across the country. I'm reminded of the brilliant line in Shakespeare's Hamlet, when Hamlet is decrying the quick remarriage of his mother immediately after the death of his father: "Thrift, thrift, Horatio! The funeral bak'd meats did coldly furnish forth the marriage tables." In much the same way, it seems there should be some way to turn candy corn into fruitcake, even though almost two months separate the holidays.

Artwork shown above right are sample Holiday Arts events in the Valley: Lincoln Theater's "Nutcracker", COPIA's "The Kinsey Sicks: Oy Vey in a Manger", Dreamweavers Theatre's "Once Upon a Wishbone - A Christmas Story", Napa Valley Opera House's "Rockapella", Napa Valley Symphony's "Voices of London", and COPIA's "The Edlos Holiday Show".

I, too, am complicit in the commercialization of Christmas. I have a vast family: four older brothers, three sisters-in-law, two nephews, a baby niece, two parents, one step-parent, and a full step-family. And I simply must buy every one of them a present. Many families adopt the pull-one-name-out-of-a-hat system, wherein they each buy only one present for one member of the family. That will never happen in mine. We see Christmas not as an opportunity to buy lots of stuff, but to honor each individual member of the family. We don't try to out-spend, we try to out-cool. I attempt, every year, not only to find gifts that speak to each person, but that have a part of me in them as well - and that are even cooler than the gift I gave last year.

This year, though, I am making a commitment. No more sweaters, no more computer gadgets, no more DVDs, no more random silly gifts that make us giggle when we open them that quickly become landfill. This year, I am giving the arts, and I invite you to do the same.

What is more precious than time spent with the people you love? What could be a better gift than something that improves the quality of life of those around you? This year, there are so many excellent opportunities for all of us to give unique gifts that benefit you, the people you love, and your community. Where do you find these gifts? All you need to do is scroll down and take a look at our Art and About and Under the Radar calendars.

This year, as a holiday gift, why don't you surprise your significant other with a night out- first dinner at a fabulous local restaurant, and then tickets to the Napa Repertory Theater's "A Christmas Carol"? It will be special, important time, spent together, which is far more meaningful than buying your date a sweater that matches the one you got him or her last year. Or how about taking your parents to Caffe Cicero not just for dinner, but to look at - and perhaps purchase - one of local artist Darlene Meltzer's gorgeous oil paintings? Why not take a friend to the Napa Valley Museum for the day as a gift? Or perhaps season tickets to the Napa Valley Symphony for the music lovers on your list? How about a gift certificate and shopping trip to G Gallery? Why not wrap the Opera House brochure in a bow, with a note that offers any show in the current season as your gift? Or why not visit the Adams Street Artisans Annual Holiday Show & Sale or the Holiday Shopping Extravaganza at the Grange Hall for hand-crafted presents by local artists? There are so many opportunities, so many possibilities, for you to give unique, heartfelt gifts this year that also engage you and make you truly a part of this community.

Let us all take time, this holiday season, to give thanks for how lucky we are to live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. And let us also find ways to give back to this valley, give back to all of the people and organizations that exist to make Napa Valley a more enriching, diverse, exciting, welcoming place to live. Let us all honor each other by honoring the arts. This year, I encourage you to forgo the sweater, forgo the gadgets, and turn to gifts that fill the soul.

Magical Moonshine

Animal Folktales of the Americas: Valerie and Michael and the puppets they
created for the Magical Moonshine original production 'Animalitos'.

MAGICAL INDEED
Making a Life in Puppet Theater

If they could be performers, what kind of stage personalities would salt and pepper shakers have? Manly, adventurous, coy, or glam diva? What occupation would a pizza slicer have? What animal does your teapot remind you of? What kind of play would a seven year old write and how could it be transformed into a theatrical production? And why is puppet theater primarily thought of as entertainment for children?

These are the kinds of questions that Valerie and Michael Nelson ask all the time. For over 25 years, this loveable and talented Yountville couple have made a living, raised a family and traveled the world (from Japan to Germany to Bangkok to Mexico City and beyond) creating and performing puppet shows with their collaborative company, "Magical Moonshine Theater".

You might assume Michael and Valerie met in the puppet community, but as Michael jokes, "No, we were serious, real people when we met." At the time, Michael was a cabinet maker and Valerie was singing in local venues. They decided to pool their creative efforts to put on a holiday puppet show at Hopper Creek Montessori, where Valerie was also working. Michael built a huge marionette stage and they put on the puppet performance that got them started down a road they never expected. The show was so popular that friends started asking them to perform at parties, and Magical Moonshine Theater was born. Magical Moonshine

(Shown left) Michael worked with Muppets creator, Jim Henson (and Kermit) in 1987 when he chosen to represent the United States at a special international symposium at the International Puppetry Institute in France.

Over the years, they expanded their repertoire to include over 30 original productions that explore themes ranging from the environment and world history to native cultures and fairy tales.

When their son Benjie was born, they continued to travel and perform as a family. Benjie first appeared on stage with his parents at the tender age of 2 and still occasionally performs, in between his mechanical engineering studies at Stanford.

Currently producing around 220 shows a year all over the map, this award-winning puppet troupe has performed in every school in Napa County many times over, as well as throughout California, through the California Arts Council's Touring Program. With state budget cuts to the arts in the last few years, Magical Moonshine hasn't been able to do as many school performances as they used to. They hope to reverse this trend, to go back into more Napa County schools, and to have a stronger local presence in general, especially for public performances. Magical Moonshine

In one of their latest projects, "Inspiring Student Stories", Michael and Valerie work with elementary-age students who write short stories. A selected few of the stories are taken by the puppet team and turned into full puppet productions that they later perform back at the students’ school. They explain that the goal is to "inspire students to want to write creatively, especially for those that may find writing challenging," to learn critical thinking, and to allow the students and their classmates to be peers in the creative process and eventually become audience members. Valerie and Michael would love to expand the program in the coming years and bring it to seven or eight Napa County schools a year, especially targeting third and fourth grade classes.

(Shown above right) Inspiring Student Stories: Scene from a recent Magical Moonshine's production of a Pueblo Vista Elementary student's poetic story about seeing the stars through a city's light pollution. Magical Moonshine

In another current Magical Moonshine production, "Cirque du Café", Michael and Valerie use everyday objects to create an entire world of circus personalities. Michael says that "object theater" is somewhere between what a prop comic does and puppet theater - the audience sees the puppeteers manipulating everyday objects. In this show, the objects are things you may find on any restaurant table - a bottle of wine, creamers, napkins. As Michael and Valerie play on stage with these "characters", moving them around, the objects begin to take on personalities, build relationships with each other, and have lives of their own. The show explores what might happen after-hours at a French bistro in a series of short vignettes including favorites such as the "Parade des Elepots" (where chubby teapots come to life as dancing elephants), "Signore Pepperoni et le Unicycle du Mort" (in which a pizza slicer does death defying swivels and jumps onto a brave assistant, the pepperoni pizza), and "Mademoiselles Sel at Poivre in Wings of Flight" (with salt and pepper shakers flipping and flying through the air on a real trapeze). In a few of the scenes Valerie shows off her classically trained vocal range - singing French ballads as local musician Steve Ventrello accompanies her on the accordion. Magical Moonshine

(Shown right) Cirque du Cafe: Witness Madame Omlette's Fearless Trained Eggs!

"The whole circus show has been evolving for 17 or 18 years and may be the best thing we've ever done," says Michael. Watching the show, it is fun to imagine the beginnings of Cirque du Café: inventive parents entertaining their young son while on tour waiting for food at restaurants. As Valerie explains, "We'd play with the creamer cups and make pyramids and have forks jump over them, create napkin ‘sky divers' (by wadding up the middles of paper napkins and throwing them in the air to watch where they'd fall). Because we also all did this as children, we connect (to this kind of entertainment) quickly."

The use of these simple, everyday objects remind us that anyone can have fun and be imaginative this way - that you don't need elaborate costumes or sets, complicated puppets or marionettes. Not only do Michael and Valerie create entire productions out of this kind of playfulness, they also continue to raise a family and make a living doing puppet theater - and it's a rare and charming breed indeed that can pull off that kind of magic.

Magical Moonshine Theater will be performing Cirque du Café on December 4 and 11 at Yountville's Wine Garden Restaurant. The performances begin at 5pm and seating is limited so RSVP now! Tickets are $20 and are available at the restaurant or by calling 707-945-1002 x1 or online at http://magicalmoonshine.org/blueinvite.htm.

POETRY & POSTSCRIPTS
Mary Shea / Editor
Mary Shea, Postscripts Editor

Your Heart

Dough rising under its cloth
with the wisdom of kneading;
your heart, small town
with the lights flickering in and
out, bathed child confessing
to the hotbed of clouds;
how I wait for it with the milk
of my longing, the voice of it
to read me a story
from the places you stopped
with the brindle of winter
marring your countenance,
the entire riptide of your day
hidden when you leave
the striped mattress and go
as you do to the burdocks
of business, that journey
you take each dawn
as if to the underworld--
factory, fortress
across those ghostly miles
that took that young man
I knew and turned him
white; how I wish I could take
that heart of yours out
from the cage of its ribs,
and make it more peaceable,
feed it soft seeds,
the bead-dew of roses,
press my warm face
against its tremulous limbs,
shelter it like a hawk's chicklet
and never will it
goodbye

        --Leonore Wilson

The Monarchs

The creek bed, near-brittle rock
Of bone, and yet the butterflies ripple,
Rush over the ferment of sludge;
Step-queens of canticles,
They will not die of thirst.
And the sun moves back as they clot
The patch, striving, shuddering
Like those in melancholy not
Sleeping, captured by images
Of those lost to death and fetching
Their images like water, as if
Saying: I dare be you in the darkened
Earth, I will drink you back to me
Through every crack that rises
In the world, I will be the wine
On your invisible lips, I will be
The small god coming to your rescue.
So in the curve of a million lights
We will fly up the bare banks
To pleasure's consummation: one
Above the full-foliage colored shore.

        --Leonore Wilson
