Michael Bayard: Bio Sketch (2008)

World-renowned percussionist, recording artist, composer and educator, Michael Bayard is a native of Flushing, Queens, New York City, where at age 12 he began his percussion career by practicing diligently on a rubber drum pad in his basement. He continued his musical studies at the Juilliard School, where he was accepted on full scholarship at age 15. One year later, he performed his Carnegie Hall debut on solo percussion with the New York Youth Symphony. At age 18, Mr. Bayard was admitted to the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, also on full scholarship. During his tenure at Curtis, Mr. Bayard performed under the batons of many internationally-celebrated conductors including Leonard Bernstein and Zubin Mehta. Two weeks after graduating Curtis, from a class of sixteen, Mr. Bayard headed west, appointed to the position of principal percussionist with the Sacramento Symphony, a post he held for 17 years.

In addition to performing over 2000 classical and contemporary music concerts over the years, Mr. Bayard has performed on percussion and drum set with many legendary popular musicians - including Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, Tony Bennett, and the late Henry Mancini, Mel Tormé, Ray Charles and Frank Sinatra.

In 1994, Michael launched "Rhythm Magic" - his finest work yet. With 125 performances a year, this compelling percussion program has inspired over two million students and adults throughout America. Through this interactive musical performance, Rhythm Magic builds self-esteem and confidence in young people. In schools, it integrates math, science, literacy, social studies and multicultural appreciation with music. And the Rhythm Magic corporate program is the key to teamwork and harmony in the workplace. Michael Bayard's Rhythm Magic program has been described as "innovative, vibrant, enlightening, dynamic and energizing." In short, Rhythm Magic is an unforgettable experience. Hear it from the kids: "I like your rhythm and your music. It makes me feel good." "I bet the more you practice, the better you do in life." And a personal favorite, "It's better than recess!"

Testimonial

I just want to share with you a phenomenal experience our Bonita students had during Red Ribbon Week last week. With the generous help of our parents' club and our TUPE funding, we were able to bring in Michael Bayard's "Rhythm Magic" program for a whole school assembly. It was captivating to say the least. I rarely promote or "stump" for assembly "speakers" and have rarely been so impressed with a program presenter as I was with Michael and his program.

Mr. Bayard had the students 100% engaged throughout the "Drums, Not Drugs" theme and his interactive teaching. He incorporated social studies, health, music, science, math and language throughout the hour long program and truly touched students and staff.

Later that day, one particularly difficult, troubled student, on his own, sought out Michael and genuinely thanked him for his beautiful music! The music had a deep effect on him. I know it had a deep effect on me.

I highly recommend consideration of Michael Bayard's dynamic, inspirational program. You can learn more at his web site and review his impressive credentials. He does custom shows for all ages and for adult/corporate leadership groups.
