Clay is earth, soil, dirt, transformed by tools and body into something like stone, skin or cloth, gritty brown, ethereal white or multihued with glaze. Ideas emerge from the fingertips, the images flowing from the hands almost without thoughts. From the studio to the garden and back, my is body exhausted from toiling with all this dirt.
Paint is smooth and viscous, distanced and intellectual. The brain tries to make sense of the colors, create dimensions that leap or recede on the flat canvas. Lots of thinking required, room for revision, covering up, starting over. Look through books, think about art history, analyze and conceptualize. It’s an internal occupation, in my studio, in my mind.
Diane Flyr has a BA in Art from UCDavis, and has been gardening and playing with clay and paint most of her life.
Her ceramic work has been shown at The Renwick Gallery in Washington, DC, The Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York, the Di Rosa Preserve and various galleries. Her Paintings have been exhibited in the Flag Show at the Napa Valley Museum and in several Napa Valley Wine Auctions
