Information for Napa County Schools, Teachers, Parents & Artist Instructors

Arts Council Napa Valley (ACNV) acts as a support and promotional organization for arts and culture in our county. Among our most important programs is providing Arts Education within our schools. Currently, ACNV has teaching programs in 18 schools in Napa County and our combined programs have expanded the lives of over 4,000 children - and counting.

"Our partnership with ACNV enables us to bring trained arts teachers into our classrooms to nurture our students' creative thinking and expression. Arts Council has also strengthened our annual program, 'Napa County Reads'. This series of events, which takes place in schools and community forums, inspires us all to greater achievement in literacy through the visual and performing arts, and it brings families together to celebrate the artistic and educational achievements of our children." --Barbara Nemko, Superintendent of Schools Napa County

Benefits of Arts Education

  • The arts transform the environment for learning to create better reading skills, higher grades, higher SAT scores, higher probability of attending college, higher attendance in schools and lower juvenile delinquency.
  • The arts provide young people with authentic, healthy avenues for expression for their minds, hearts and bodies.
  • The arts connect students to themselves, their families, their teachers and each other in ways not otherwise available.
  • The arts bring learning experiences crucial to today's workplace: the ability to generate, develop and communicate new ideas.

Arts Education programs include:

  • Training and hiring highly talented artists of all disciplines to teach workshops and perform in school-wide assemblies, both during and after school;
  • Providing hands-on arts activities for children and families at several area festivals;
  • Sponsoring professionally framed and installed quarterly student art exhibitions at Napa City Hall, complete with a reception for their families and official recognition by Napa City Council;
  • Expanding Napa County Reads, a program through the Napa County Office of Education, to include the support and involvement of the arts community;
  • Proving professional development to new and experienced teaching artists to work within the California State Standards for the Visual & Performing Arts.

A good deal of research has been done on the benefits of arts education. Without programs like ours, there could be a devastating effect on our children.
