Ulises Meza (Orland, CA)

Air
"Air", Fabricated Steel, 6'H x 2.5'W x 5'D, $4,500

Air by Ulises Meza is a piece that explores line and movement through the use of steel, bringing a lyrical quality to an otherwise hard-edged medium. There is a mesmerizing quality in this piece, from the bending and moving of the steel— a material known for its unwillingness to yield.

Ulises often incorporates toys and objects associated with play into his work, as well as images that our society considers to be nostalgic. The airplanes are toy size but they also represent real objects. They present a disarming image that has a playful aura about it, but it also represents conflict.

The Corsair and Zero airplanes used in the sculpture were selected for their reference to World War II, a period of great nostalgia in America.
