Launched in 2010 and now in its second exhibition year, the Napa ARTwalk is a rotating, temporary, outdoor sculpture exhibition showcasing a variety of three-dimensional artwork throughout Downtown Napa. Featuring a new theme each exhibition, the ARTwalk supports the creation of original, high-quality and collaborative sculpture from regional artists, selected with the help of CaFE (callforentry.org) and a panel of local art administrators, artists, and city officials. The ARTwalk succeeds in increasing foot traffic in our downtown retail sector, as it is self-guided, free and accessible 365 days a year.
The tour also acts as an educational vehicle for understanding and appreciating the power of public art in our community: by way of QR (“quick read”) code technology, the ARTwalk features an audio tour, accessible any time of day. QR codes are featured both on the program’s brochure and on plaques mounted to each sculpture’s platform. Each scan code calls up information about the artist’s sculpture and website.
Tour maps and brochures for the Napa ARTwalk are printed each exhibition period, and are made available at no cost to the public by way of the Napa Valley Welcome Center, and are also available download on the Napa ARTwalk website (NapaArtWalk.org).
Whether a local resident, a cultural tourist, or a bit of both, the Napa ARTwalk provides the public with a cost-free cultural exploration of the Napa Valley.
Following overwhelming positive feedback from both local and visiting populations to Napa, ACNV hopes to expand the ARTwalk each exhibition round, increasing the amount of sculptures and featured locations on exhibition each year.
The program goals are to:
Artworks remain on view for 18-month cycles. 13 sculptures are exhibited on the 2011-13 tour, titled Momentum: Art That Move(s) Us, with a focus on sculptural work that is kinetic or implies movement. Planning for the 2013-15 exhibition is currently underway.
Printed and download-friendly brochures, including a map of artwork locations, enable self-guided viewing of the exhibition with volunteer docents leading scheduled ARTwalk tours. Exhibition hours are daily from sunrise to sunset. To pick up a copy of the Napa ARTwalk brochure, visit the Napa Valley Welcome Center at 600 Main Street in Downtown Napa.
