Creative Writing/Journalism Teacher

William James Association | Vacaville, CA | Apply by December 31st, 2017

CALL FOR WRITER Solano State Prison

We're looking for a professional, inspiring and well-rounded creative writing/journalism teacher for weekly classes at Solano State Prison, Vacaville, CA. They are particularly interested in starting up a newspaper, blog or other periodical.

We are also looking for a professional, inspiring and well-rounded creative writing/poetry teacher for Mule Creek State Prison, Ione, CA (45 miles southeast of Sacramento).

The Prison Arts Project focuses on hands-on classes in the visual, literary and performing arts. We are part of the Arts in Corrections program and work with the California Arts Council under the auspices of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

The best candidate is a versatile, resourceful, committed and resilient artist who can work well in the unusual setting of a prison.  Experience teaching desirable, preferably with adults. Previous work with inmate populations not required, but would certainly be helpful. People of color are encouraged to apply.

The impact on the lives of the people who are in prison can be profound due to their willingness, gratefulness and unique perspectives and can be a very rewarding experience for artists in sharing their expertise with others.  We will provide training and support around teaching in prison.  We anticipate two, 3hr classes weekly on Fridays.
