"The garden suggests there might be
a place where we can meet nature halfway."
~Michael Pollan

Since I became a vegetarian 22 years ago, my food awareness has evolved from simply giving up meat to eating responsibly, not just for myself but for the health of the planet. The Makers I chose to photograph are people working towards a sustainable way of producing and enjoying food. They are the vanguard of this now popular movement that wants us to reconnect with our bodies through better eating.
Janet Fletcher trained at the epicenter of slow food, Chez Panisse. Through her numerous article and books on food and wine she shows her appreciation for fresh-from-the-garden ingredients and promotes local farmers. Karen Schuppert, chair of Napa’s Local Food Advisory Council, found inspiration in managing the St. Helena Farmers Market and became a certified Nutrition Educator.
By choosing products that use repurposed, reimagined, or recycled materials, Diane Padoven’s eco-friendly company (Napa Farmhouse 1885) shows us how to “live a green life of style” while J Kirk Feirereisen’s value-based coffee roastery (Yo el Rey) proves that fair-trade organic products not only taste better, they feel right.
Nearby at JoLe: Farm to Table, Matt and Sonjia Spector feed people award-winning meals made with organic, locally farmed ingredients. Laura Levesque Page (aka The Healthy Junkie) just completed her memoir about how conscious eating and positive thinking literally saved her life. We should all be inspired to follow these innovators to the garden.

Professionally she is the Marketing Manager at di Rosa, and has over 13 years experience working with art organizations such as Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek.
