Napa County Poetry Out Loud Winners Announced

Feb. 13, 2015 | Arts Council Napa Valley

Arts Council Napa Valley announces the winners of the Countywide contest for Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest.  The first place winner and recipient of $200 award is Delia Bisconer from Justin-Siena High School and second place winner and recipient of $100 award is Aubrey May from Napa High School.

The competition, presented in partnership with Arts Council Napa Valley, California Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Foundation, is part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. On February 11th, 10 high school students from Napa County participated in the Poetry Out Loud school contest at the Lucky Penny Community Arts Center. A video of the contest recitations will be available shortly at ArtsCouncilNapaValley.org.

Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition to high schools across the country.  Poetry Out Loud uses a pyramid structure. Beginning at the classroom level, winners advance to a countywide competition, then to the state competition, and ultimately to the National Finals in Washington, DC.

In the 2014‐2015 school year, Poetry Out Loud celebrates its tenth anniversary, reaching nearly 2.5 million students at more than 7,300 schools nationwide in the past decade. At the Napa County finals, students recited works they selected from an anthology of more than 800 classic and contemporary poems.

The Napa County winner will advance to the California State contest on March 15-16, 2015 in Sacramento.  Each champion at the state level will receive $200 and an all‐expenses‐paid trip to Washington, DC, to compete for the national championship, April 28‐29, 2015.  The school of the state champion will receive $500 for the purchase of poetry books.
