StreetSmARTS Informational Meeting for Artists | February 5th, 2014 [San Francisco, CA]

The San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) and the Department of Public Works (DPW) have continued to join forces in combating vandalism in the City with an innovative program called StreetSmARTS. The program connects established urban artists with private property owners to create vibrant murals, a proven and effective strategy for making property less vulnerable to graffiti vandalism. StreetSmARTS also aims to restore San Francisco's stature as a recognized, international destination for mural art.

Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) is a unique research-based school program that develops students’ critical thinking and literacy skills through collaborative discussions of carefully chosen visual images. The two-day VTS Practicum is an intensive introduction to VTS for those with little to no experience. Although some time is allotted to examining theoretical underpinnings of VTS, the focus is helping participants learn to do VTS well.

• Re-engages educators and ensures their continued professional development and vitality in the classroom

• Enjoyable discussion-based lessons that encourage self- expression and develop confidence

From June 30th to July 25th, the University of Michigan’s American Music Institute, with support from the Star Spangled Music Foundation, will be hosting the national “Banner Moments” Summer Institute at the University of Maryland, College Park, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. During these four weeks, thirty K-12 school teachers will explore topics in American history and culture through the lens of the Star-Spangled Banner and related American music. Participants will receive a $3300 stipend.

VietNam 2014: A Photographic Travel Workshop | April 1, 2014 [Napa, CA - Vietnam]
When: 16 days and 14 nights, from August 12 to Aug 27.
Where: Ha Noi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Sapa.
Travel in VietNam with a tour guide who speaks the language and learn how to take better pictures from an Artist/Professional Photographer, Vi Bottaro. As a participant, you will photograph the People, the Culture and the Landscapes. You will also be photographing: Ha Noi, the old capital of the North - a city of food and culture; Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site where over 2,000 limestone karsts rising from the ocean to the sky; Ninh Binh, where Vi was born, named the second Ha Long Bay but besides the beautiful limestone karsts, Ninh Binh is dotted with original temples, beautiful rice fields and national parks. Sapa, another UNESCO World Heritage site where the terraced rice fields are of epic proportions and in August, these rice fields will be in full color. Sapa is also the land of the original 5 ethnic tribes. The group will be staying at some unique lodgings that boast some of the best views in the world. There will be discussions about the culture and what to look for when photographing as well as light and camera techniques. Detailed itineraries available upon request. Beginners as well as intermediate and advanced photo enthusiasts are welcomed.
Deposit: $500 to hold a spot, non-refundable after April 01, 2014. Balance is due by 04-01.
