A Million Plates Campaign

This year, August brings the start of the new school year and a new way to support arts education. Join the California Arts Council's "Million Plates Campaign" by buying an Arts License Plate, designed by beloved California artist, Wayne Thiebaud! The annual fees ($50 first year, $40 thereafter) are 100% tax deductible and support arts education in California schools.

Even though the state of California boasts the 9th largest economy in the world, we are dead last in the nation for arts funding. The CAC's "One Million Plates Campaign" aims to bring an additional $40 million in arts education to our students every year. Since the Arts Plate first went on sale in 1994, it has raised over $20 million for CA students. The now tax deductible arts license plate funds are received by the CAC and a re-granted to California's 52 local arts council arts education programs, like ACNV's.

For the 10-11 school year, ACNV was granted $17k from the CAC for to enrich Napa County's elementary school arts programming and $1k to launch the Poetry Outloud Program in our high schools. This year, these funds will serve approximately 2,000 students in Napa County, only a fraction of the over 20k students currently enrolled. Imagine what California would be like if every student received quality arts education experiences? www.artsplate.org. To find out how to bring the arts to your school, visit www.artsednapa.org.

A new benefit for Arts Council members! Carol Lorraine, M.A. is offering a 10% discount on 3 hours of her coaching services for creative professionals who want to have a breakthrough in their art business by increasing their income. Visit Website.

Arts Council welcomes new board members, Bob Almeida (President and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Napa Valley Opera House), Azalea Aguilar (Vintage High School Teacher), and Olivia Everett (Wandering Rose).

Napa ARTwalk Opening Ceremony, Tour & Reception

On July 14th, a crowd of about 50 gathered at the Napa City Hall to commemorate the launch of the great new annual program, Napa ARTwalk on a sunny afternoon. Audio file descriptions exist for each artist on the website; simply click open the artist's Web page and click the ARTwalk logo and an MP3 will launch. Thank you Kellie Fuller of KVYN radio for her fabulous voiceover work! To test it out, visit www.napaartwalk.org.

NAPA COUNTY READS: OPEN CALL FOR ARTISTS

Napa County Reads past years' art projects
(L-R) 2008 "The Mailbox" by Audrey Shafer: artwork by Michele Mitcavish and Patrick Allen; 2009 "Reaching Out" by Francisco Jimenez: artwork by Patti Wessman and Jose Charles.

Napa County Reads is an annual program and fundraiser in support of literacy for elementary through high school youth. Each year a functional object is selected to serve as a special "canvas" for each artist to use to interpret the themes associated with the selected book of the year ("SHIFTY" by Lynn E. Hazen). This year, the Arts Council has chosen planters. The planters signify a place to put down roots, a place that nurtures growth and development, a home. We invite artists to use the planters to express something that inspired you or spoke to you in the story. The only requirement is that the art piece is usable as a planter upon completion. On October 27 at the Napa Valley Opera House, a silent auction of the artistic works will held to raise money for this program. Deadline to participate is August 31. Click here for more information.
