Introducing Napa Valley ARTS 2010: All-county culture festival spotlights homegrown creativity!
The Napa Valley already hosts plenty of festivals featuring world-famous artists, from painters and sculptors to performers of all genres who take the stage at historic venues around the county dozens
of times a year.
Now, for the first time, Napa will celebrate the bounty of its own creative community in a month-long festival of all the arts, with close to 100 events taking place over five weekends from mid-October to mid-November.
"Napa Valley ARTS 2010 isn't a manufactured event," explains Bob Almeida, president of the Napa Valley Opera House and a member of the board for Arts Council Napa Valley, the 30-year-old non-profit that is presenting the festival. "This is simply a compilation of all the artistic effort that takes place all the time, around the year, in the Napa Valley," continues Almeida. "For a place that has about 135,000 residents, this county has such a rich variety of artistic resources---from visual arts to performing arts."
In fact, there's never been a better time for Napa County visitors to sample cultural delights that match the valley's better-known food and wine offerings. "We're celebrating all of the arts, venues and creativity in the community," says Kristina Young, a visual artist who is also acting executive director of Arts Council Napa Valley.
The new festival opens Oct. 15 with a reception at Mumm Napa, where the winery's renowned photography gallery will host a three-week exhibition featuring portraits of local artists created by local photographers. The exhibition, "Meet the Makers," will also include panel texts written by "The Art Girls", a trio of talented sixth-graders who jointly interviewed 10 of the show's subjects about their creative practice. The youngsters themselves have been working together on a mural that will be the only non-photography piece in the Mumm show. Click here to buy tickets to Meet the Makers.
Other events in the month-long Napa Valley ARTS 2010 celebration will include plays, concerts, the debut of a new film festival ("Dr. Spin's Propaganda Machine"), dedicated to shorter works, and a Day of the Dead reading by Latin-American teenagers who are creating their own podcast about the Latino experience: "La Vida Napa."
Arts Council Napa Valley is producing a catalog of events for ARTS 2010, but more are being added every week. For the most up-to-date listings of what's happening in the Napa Valley arts and culture scene, visit www.nvarts.org.

CALIFORNIA ARTS DAY OCTOBER 1
California Arts Day was created by the California Arts Council and established by Proclamation of the Governor. It takes place the first Friday of October every year during National Arts & Humanities Month.
Arts Day began not only as a celebration of creativity; in its first year it was part of the healing process after the tragedies of September 11, 2001 and served as an opportunity for Californians to re-connect with their communities and affirm humanity's finer instincts.
The purpose of Arts Day is to demonstrate the role and value of arts and culture throughout California. The California Arts Council has encouraged the celebration of Arts Day by working to make this a commonly recognized annual celebration using two simple messages:
* The arts are important - economically, socially, and educationally.
* The arts are everywhere.
Arts Day has been celebrated in many ways during the last several years---from music festivals, free museum admissions and free nights at performing arts venues, to arts advocacy rallies, advertisements, contests and newspaper columns. It is an opportunity for Californians to appreciate and experience the power and influence of the arts in all aspects of our lives---building communities, bridging cultures and celebrating diversity.

SUPPORT MILLION PLATES CAMPAIGN
This year, August brings the start of the new school year and a new way to support arts education. Join the California Arts Council's "Million Plates Campaign" by buying an Arts License Plate, designed by beloved California artist, Wayne Thiebaud! The annual fees ($50 first year, $40 thereafter) are 100% tax deductible and support arts education in California schools.
Even though the state of California boasts the 9th largest economy in the world, we are dead last in the nation for arts funding. The CAC's "One Million Plates Campaign" aims to bring an additional $40 million in arts education to our students every year. Since the Arts Plate first went on sale in 1994, it has raised over $20 million for CA students. The now tax deductible arts license plate funds are received by the CAC and a re-granted to California's 52 local arts council arts education programs, like ACNV's.
For the 10-11 school year, ACNV was granted $17k from the CAC for to enrich Napa County's elementary school arts programming and $1k to launch the Poetry Outloud Program in our high schools. This year, these funds will serve approximately 2,000 students in Napa County, only a fraction of the over 20k students currently enrolled. Imagine what California would be like if every student received quality arts education experiences? www.artsplate.org. To find out how to bring the arts to your school, visit www.artsednapa.org.
ACNV is proud to sponsor Wandering Rose, a volunteer organization whose mission is to promote independent, experimental and pop visual and performing arts.
