Napa, CA, March 19, 2010: Arts Council Napa Valley and The Napa Community Redevelopment Agency have begun their search for exceptional artists to participate in the Napa ARTwalk, a temporary juried exterior sculpture exhibition. For this first year of the annual Napa ARTwalk, the partners have selected the theme "Celebrating the Napa River." The program will officially launch in June 2010, when the sculptures will be installed on ten sites along First and Main Streets in the heart of downtown Napa.
In October 2009, the City Council of Napa approved the Napa ARTwalk program, which is designed to enhance the public environment and promote the understanding and enjoyment of public art by inviting artists to exhibit their art in downtown Napa on a temporary basis. Artworks will remain on view from June 2010 -- May 2011, during which time community members and visitors may vote to select one artwork for a People's Choice Award, to be presented to the winner in Spring 2011.
"This program is designed to bring people downtown to celebrate the arts, showcase creative talent, and provide educational opportunities. This year will also spotlight the importance of the Napa River," says Kristina Young, Acting Executive Director of Arts Council Napa Valley. "We especially encourage local sculptors to apply."
All artists over 18 who reside or work in California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, or Arizona may apply to participate. This year's jurors include: Ned Kahn, renowned artist and recipient of two Public Art Network Year In Review awards, the Americans for the Arts Public Art Award and a MacArthur Foundation "Genius Grant"; Jon A. Lail, Executive Principal, CEO and Founder of Lail Design Group, and St. Helena representative to the Napa County Arts & Culture Commission; Carrie Lederer, Artist and Curator of Exhibitions at the Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek; Kathryn Reasoner, Executive Director of di Rosa in Napa; and Patricia Watts, Curator and Co-founder of ecoartspace, of San Francisco, and New York City, NY.
