Napa County Reads 2011 Presents: Bull Rider
Arts Council Napa Valley
Napa County Office of Education
Napa, CA

Arts Council Napa Valley Artists' Opportunities

Arts Council Napa Valley Artists' Opportunities

MONDAY MAY 9, 2011, Napa, Calif.

About Napa County Reads:

Arts Council Napa Valley (ACNV), in partnership with the Napa County Office of Education (NCOE) and Napa City-County Library, produces Napa County Reads, an annual program promoting literacy in Napa County schools and the community at large. Each year, ACNV brings in the support of the visual arts community by soliciting artwork submissions—based upon a nominated novel— that are sold at silent auction. The Napa County Reads Auction and Reception proceeds benefit County literacy programming.

2011 Napa County Reads Selection:

The chosen novel for the year 2011 is Bull Rider by Susan Morgan Williams. Told in a clipped, first person narrative, Bull Rider makes the sports details of skateboarding and bull-riding part of a powerful contemporary story of family, community, and work. Based on the story’s setting in Salt Lick, Nevada, Napa County artists will be asked to construct, reinvent, or customize salt and pepper shakers, portraying key thematic events of the story through their artworks.

This project is open to Napa County resident artists 18 and over. Completed artwork must be functional and may not have been previously shown in a Napa County Reads or Arts Council Napa Valley exhibition. This project has limited entry. To be considered for participation, artists must submit a request via email to Kate Demarest by June 1, 2011. In your email, please include a summary (200 word maximum) listing the proposed materials of your project, as well as a current resume and a photo or link to recent work. Accepted artists will receive a copy of Bull Rider plus a stipend of $25.00 to cover the costs of materials. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance by June 30, 2011. Contact:
