NAPA, California, June 4, 2010. Arts Council Napa Valley (ACNV) announces the newly appointed Poet Laureate of Napa County Michael Waterson, elected by the Napa County Board of Supervisors on May 28th. Waterson succeeds the position of Gary Silva, and will serve a two-year term through 2012.

Waterson's educational background includes a Master of Fine Arts from Mills College, following a Bachelor of Arts degree from San Francisco State University, both focused in Creative Writing. Professional titles of playwright, reviewer, newspaper editor of The American Canyon Eagle, songwriter, and composer fill his history along with his lifelong development as a poet.

Gary Silva was born in the East Bay and has lived in California most of his life. He completed his M.A. in literature and poetry writing at CSU, Fresno and his M.F.A. in poetry writing at U.C., Irvine. He taught at Napa Valley College since 1990 and retired in 2008. He was also Poet Laureate of Napa County from 2008-2010. Gary Silva has had a lifelong passion for poetry writing and has published poems in dozens of literary magazines across the United States. He is married and has two cats.
