ACNV Grantee Announces Two Original Napa-focused Plays

Local playwright and actor, Barry Martin: Staged reading set for two original Napa-focused plays

Two original plays by Barry Martin will be presented for the first time at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 12th, 2018, at the Lucky Penny Community Arts Center. The staged reading of these plays caps off the first year of the Napa Focused Play Cycle Project, funded for 2017 by the Arts Council Napa Valley Community Fund Grants Program for Individual Artists.

“The Tasting Room”and “Bacchanlia Live!” are comedic works for the stage that are in development as full-length plays. The staged reading serves as a step in the process toward a fully staged production in the future. The reading will be followed by a talkback conversation with the audience. “The goal of the Napa-focused Play Cycle Project is to create scripts for a series of plays that tell the story of this unique place and its people from multiple perspectives,” said author Barry Martin. “Since our community’s economics and lifestyle are centered on agriculture, winemaking and food, the plays are focused on those topics. I am working to provide a sense of history and culture mixed with a view of current issues.” Martin has had short plays produced at Actors Theatre of Santa Cruz and Napa Valley Playhouse, and presented a staged reading of other one act plays in 2011.

The staged reading of “The Tasting Room” and “Bacchanlia Live!” will be presented at 8:00 p.m. Friday, January 12, 2018, for one night only, at the Lucky Penny Community Arts Center. All seats are $20. Tickets can be purchased online at luckypennynapa.com or by calling 707-266-6305.
