Arts Council Napa Valley Education Alliance Announces

 November Art Students of the Month

December  3, 2019 (Napa, CA) — The Arts Council Napa Valley Education Alliance is pleased to announce the first ever visual and performing arts students of the month winners for November. Six students are being recognized in five different art disciplines–music, dance, theater, visual arts and digital media. This new annual awards initiative will seek nominees monthly culminating in an awards ceremony in April, 2020 to announce the ACNVEA VAPA students of the year and scholarship winners. ACNVEA is now accepting nominations for December from College, High School, Middle School and Elementary level visual and performing arts teachers from throughout the county. Here are November’s winners:

High School & College Level Winners

Music: McCauley Smith, Napa High. Choir Director, Duncan Cooper, recognized her for her commitment to creating community between the three high school choirs, by not only singing in them, but organizing social outings.

Dance: Faith Burger, Vintage High. Dance Director, Lisa Sullivan, recognized her not only for her dance skills in tap, ballet, en pointe’, lyrical, contemporary, jazz, hip hop, salsa, and character; but for also helping with all aspects of performance including choreography and overall program design. 

Theater: Sophia Osborne, St. Helena High.

Theater: Sophia Osborne, St. Helena High. Theater Director, Patti Coyle, recognized her for initiating the idea of mounting a student directed production of The Laramie Project, the critically acclaimed true story about a small town coming to grips with questions of human rights after Matthew Shepard is murdered. 

Visual Arts: Zoe Murphy, Vintage High.

Visual Arts: Zoe Murphy, Vintage High. Instructor, Crystal Clark, recognized this AP student for taking absolutely every opportunity to learn and grow not only her own art practice but those of others. She is the Art Club President and will submit her Art AP Portfolio in the spring.

Printing & Graphic Design: Enrique DeHaro, Vintage High.

Printing & Graphic Design: Enrique DeHaro, Vintage High. NCOE Career Technical Education (CTE) Instructor, Shawn Sandahl, recognized him for being a design leader, using his insights and design thinking, as well as his soft-spoken approach, to encourage others to achieve their best. 

Middle & Elementary Level Winners

Visual Arts: Valerie Salgado, Harvest Middle School.

Visual Arts: Valerie Salgado, Harvest Middle School. Instructor, Lizz Lloyd, recognized her for embracing bold techniques and creative solutions to make expressive pieces that are far more advanced than those of her peers.

ACNVEA did not receive nomination in any other discipline for middle or elementary school. 

All nominated students will receive a certificate acknowledging their exemplary work and dedication to furthering their art.

ACNVEA is currently reaching out to teachers throughout the county seeking nominees for the month of December. All nominees will be recognized with a certificate and winners (One Visual, one Performing at Elementary  & Middle school level, two Visual & two performing at the high school/college level) will be featured on social media and receive recognition from appropriate school boards. If you know someone, a teacher or a student who deserves recognition, please direct them to the ACNV or ACNVEA websites for full details, including the Call for Nominees document  Nominations are due by the 15th of every month.
