2014 Solo Instrumental Competition

Calling all young musicians in grades 10 – 12 with a classical music repertoire!

Have you been playing one of the following instruments and striving to achieve the highest musical standard?

Join us for our first annual competition on Wednesday April 16, 2014 at 4 p.m. at the Napa Valley Performing Arts Center at the Lincoln Theater in Yountville to compete for a cash prize. In addition, all three winners will be invited to perform in a pre-concert recital during the 2014 Music in the Vineyards Festival in August. Every August for the past twenty years, MITV has been performing fine chamber music throughout the Napa Valley.

“International Contemporary Artists” volume VIII

The process of selecting contemporary artists to present their work in “International Contemporary Artists” volume VIII is nearly over and there are only a few available pages left in the book.



-Artists who are above 18 years old can submit their work for selection.

-All artworks must have been created by the submitting artists, who must have legal ownership and must be the sole owners of the copyright.

-All media and techniques of visual art can be submitted for review, such as painting, photography, sculpture, installations and digital art, etc.


Entry information

– Artists who are interested in joining us to this project must send 4-5 images of their work (jpg format) and a short statement of about 100 words by email.

-All images must include the work’s title as well.

– Submissions can be send by email.

Specifics about the publication

-A juried committee of established art critics reviews the submitted works on a daily basis and selects the best ones that will be presented in the book.

-Notification of acceptance is made by email within 3-5 working days.

-In the end of the editing process, the jurors select the best two works that will be presented in the front and the back cover of the book free of charge.

-Moreover, the best five artists among the ones presented in the book will be awarded with their personal art book, sponsored by I.C.A Publishing.

-The book will be published in May 2014.

The book is distributed worldwide through major wholesalers, bookstores and online shops.

The Workshop Residence’s Annual Residency Competition

After two years of residencies by direct invitation to artists, we are pleased to announce our first Annual Residency Competition. A jury of art & design professionals will review project proposals and select one applicant to be awarded a residency for the month of August 2014.  During this residency, we will work with the selected artist/designer to develop their proposed products to manufactured locally and sold in our store. The competition winner will receive travel funds, $2,000 honoraria, up to $5,000 in project budget, the use of our large studio/workshop, accommodations in our adjacent apartment and a royalty from the sales of their product.

“Lucky Penny Presents” kicks off new series with “I’m the Greatest FUTURE Star!” Musical Theater Showcase for Kids

May 18 event set for City Winery at the Historic Napa Valley Opera House

Lucky Penny Productions, in cooperation with the Napa Valley Opera Houses, will present a musical theater showcase for youth titled I’m the Greatest FUTURE Star! on Sunday, May 18 at 5:30 p.m. The showcase is open to young singers ages 6 to 14 and is designed to provide performance experience for up and coming local and regional singers.

“Our first Future Star event was a huge success a year ago,” said Taylor Bartolucci. “We are excited to once again give young singers a chance learn and grow, and to have the opportunity to perform on the Opera House stage.” This production featuring youth is the first in the new Lucky Penny Presents series of Sunday music shows at the Opera House.

Landscape Alchemy:Sense, Place, and Re-Materialization [Marin Headlands, CA]

Scale the hillsides in search of new perspectives, dunk photographic paper in the surf, and discover the secret power of fog. Using the dynamic landscape of the Marin Headlands as muse, this project-based workshop explores representation of place at the intersection of image-making and natural phenomena. Artists John Chiara (AIR ’10), Liam Everett (GF ’12-’13, AIR ’14), and Meghann Riepenhoff (AFF ’12-’14) guide participants through a range of experiences including the creation of seaside cyanotypes, experiments in collective landscape photography, and tutorials involving the physical environment in the art-making process.

Portraits at the Margin: Narrative, Place & Photographic Practice [Marin Headlands, CA]

Come together with fellow photographers to reflect on and grow your creative practice in this weekend intensive. South African photographer Pieter Hugo (AIR ’14), artist and SFAI faculty member Alice Shaw, and writer, curator, and critic Glen Helfand (AIR ‘03) lead participants through a series of individual and group exercises. Activities include artist presentations, critique sessions, literature-based prompts, and field time amidst the historic landscape of the Marin Headlands. Photographers at all levels are welcome to register; registrants should be prepared to present an existing body of work as part of participation.

Preserving Family Photographs with conservator Gawain Weaver

“Preserving Family Photographs” will provide information about the types of photographs found in family photo collections, including how to identify the various photographic processes and how this information can assist in the dating of family photos. Gawain will discuss the physical and chemical causes of deterioration, and provide guidance on the care and preservation of photographs including scrapbooks and photo albums. He will also show examples of photograph conservation and restoration from complex chemical treatments to simple cleaning and tear repair to digital restoration in Adobe Photoshop.

This is a unique opportunity for all history, art, and genealogy enthusiasts to learn more about properly caring for the photographic treasures in our homes, wineries, or public collections – whether they are historic gems or fine art.  No prior knowledge of photography needed and attendees are welcome to bring along photographs they would like advice about.
