PURPOSE:
To assist the Department of Diversity, Equity and Community in providing high quality performing arts opportunities in partnership with K-12 schools and universities, and in family and adult programs.

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent work experience

 

EXPERIENCE:

Extensive experience and active current practice in one or more of the following art disciplines: poetry and libretto (script) writing and editing, vocal and instrumental performance, theatre/drama performance, stage direction, composition/songwriting, dance/movement performance, videography, ensemble conducting and set, costume and lighting design
Minimum of 3 years’ teaching experience working with students and educators in Kindergarten through Grade 12; experience working with university students and faculty, families, or adult learners
Experience working with students in an urban setting, from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds preferred
Particularly experienced with middle school aged youth
Experience working with English Language Learners, students wtih special needs, and “at risk” youth preferred
Ability to communicate in multiple languages; particularly Spanish, Cantonese and/or Mandarin, or Arabic preferred

PREREQUISITE SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to learn the content and practice of Opera ARIA Residency programs
Ability to learn the content and practice of other DEC Department programs, i.e. family, adult and/or university
Knowledge of opera, music and/or the performing arts
Knowledge of school systems, Kindergarten through 12 and university
Knowledge of SFUSD Arts Master Plan, Alameda County Learnin Frameworks, CA State Standards, national Core Arts Standards, and Common Core State Standards.
Knowledge of Bay Area arts-in-education community
Willingness to learn and implement best practices in the arts-in-education field, including current pedagogical techniques in the fields of music, dance, visual arts, and theater
Ability to create and implement process-based lessons based on the new California Visual and Performing Arts Learning Standards
Proven classroom management skills
Ability to clearly present complex information in an engaging manner to various audiences, both orally and written
Capacity to exercise initiative and judgement in the development, implementation, and improvement of programs
Establish and maintain collegial working relationships based on honest communication with a wide range of people, including other teaching artists, teachers, and administrators
Ability to work in a professional manner as a productive member of a team
Expertise in Project Management with outstanding planning, organizing, and coordinating skills
Ability to receive and review work-related correspondence, always responding in a timely manner
Able to work a varied, part-time schedule up to 45 weeks per year
Flexibility with work schedule and work location
Ability to work independently and resourcefully (off-site) to complete assigned tasks
Ability to submit an accurate weekly timesheet according to the payroll schedule
Intermediate skills in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Google Suite (Drive, Forms, Calendar)

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Plans and implements program content in collaboration with K-12 educators, as guided by the department’s school program structures; including unit/lesson planning, evaluation, and documentation for both the Opera ARIA (Arts Resources In Action) and JRAP (Jerry Rosenstein Arts Project)
When appropriate, mentor teaching artists in the implementation of school programs in partnership with the Community Engagement Manager
Participates in our learning community by being an active participant in ongoing professional development; and leads professional development for teaching artists and educators
Participates in administrative work including attending Department school program meetings, representing the Department in school administration meetings and events, and updating school program documents
Collaborates and communicates effectively with department administrative staff and fellow teaching artists; develops and maintains relationships with external partners and stakeholders including, but not limited to:  the San Francisco Opera Guild, other arts organizations, and school district administrators and educators
Plans and implements university partnerships and family and adult opera education programs
Represents the San Francisco Opera in the arts and education communities.

Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
