Biography

Ivan Rafael Colin was raised in Napa and attended Pueblo Vista Elementary and River Middle School, completing his studies at Justin-Siena High School.  While a student at Linfield College in Oregon he played collegiate soccer and majored in Studio Arts with a thesis track in fine painting. After graduating in 2015, Ivan continued to pursue his soccer ambitions, playing for a team in Bellingham Washington. He recently returned to the Napa Valley and now plays for the local semi pro soccer team “1839” which competes around the country, against teams including the New York Cosmos, Detroit City FC, and Chattanooga FC. Ivan’s artistic career continues as well in the form of commissions, shows, digital design, and personal projects.

 Artist Statement

I was humbled to be asked by Latino Heritage Committee of the Hispanic Network to create this year's featured art piece for posters celebrating Latinx Heritage throughout the Napa Valley.

I took it upon myself to create a work of art that symbolizes Latin native roots and cultural icons. I am fascinated by ancient civilizations and origin stories. The painting depicts (viewed from left to right) Peruvian textiles, a Toltec warrior statue, an Olmec colossal head, Amazonian native birds, the Christ the Redeemer statue, Machu Picchu, Moai Heads of the Rapa Nui people, and the Argentine tango. It is undeniable the similarities between distant cultures from ancient times to present day -- between Egyptian pyramids and the pyramids of Mesoamerican Tribes, as well as the Statue of Liberty and the Cristo Redentor. Through our differences in a time of boundaries it is important to remember that we are all a part of one human race.

Based on community interest, I will offer a very limited release of fine art, signed print reproductions of this painting. I will also offer tee shirts celebrating Latinx heritage.  Please contact me at gratizoul@gmail.com with any questions, to place an order or to add your name to my mailing list to follow my art.
