“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” is, at its heart, a story about the struggle for control and dominance among people forced to interact with each other in an institutional setting.
When Randle P. McMurphy gets transferred for evaluation from a prison farm to a mental institution, he assumes it will be a less restrictive environment. But the martinet Nurse Ratched runs the psychiatric ward with an iron fist, keeping her patients cowed through abuse, medication and sessions of electroconvulsive therapy. A battle of wills begins between the rebellious McMurphy, who seems to become a champion of the suppressed patients, and the inflexible Ratched. Soon, all the ward's patients are affected and Ratched's methods of dealing with McMurphy grow increasingly extreme.
It is a story about cruelty, and kindness, strength and weakness. It is about survival and surrender. It presents the human condition with honesty, humor, and pathos.
