Arts Council Napa Valley Education Alliance

In 2013, Arts Council Napa Valley (ACNV) founded the ACNV Education Alliance to support, sustain, and advocate for arts education in Napa County. This public-private alliance made up of educators, students, community volunteers, and district arts administrators began with a comprehensive assessment of the local arts education landscape. In 2015, with the assessment complete and major support from Festival Napa Valley, the Education Alliance partners and the Napa Valley Unified School District (NVUSD) commissioned and drafted the NVUSD Arts Master Plan, which presents a comprehensive framework for the development of TK-12 sequential, standards-based arts education curriculum. Since then, the NVUSD Board of Education unanimously adopted the Arts Master Plan and hired a full-time Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Coordinator, co-funded by ACNV Ed Alliance partners, to lead the initiative. Currently, new curriculum and programs are being developed to fulfill the promise of the assessment and the Alliance mission and NVUSD Arts Master Plan.

Our mission is to inspire the voice and creative mind within
every student in Napa County.

We believe the arts engage and connect students with each other, their school, and their community and are integral to teaching and learning 21st century skills. Through partnering with schools and the community, we will ensure equitable access to a culturally-relevant arts education.

We envision:

STUDENTS who have access to sequentially learned and applied arts curriculum including exposure and enrichment opportunities and integration within all curriculums allowing expression with confidence and engagement in the world creatively.

TEACHERS who create a safe environment where critical thinking and curiosity are celebrated.

SCHOOLS that build bridges to families and communities.

DISTRICTS that increase access to holistic educational opportunities and create curricular pathways to careers and college.

ARTISTS that provide mentorship through passionate and expert practice

ARTS ORGANIZATIONS that provide and support relevant, engaging and significant educational opportunities for students of all ages.

COMMUNITIES that celebrate the arts and support sustainable arts education for their children recognizing the importance of the arts to the whole person and a healthy community.

The Arts Education Master Plan

2014-2015 Executive Summary, Full Phase 1 Assessment

A Leadership Team was created to focus on identifying priority strategic goals. The process, with goals at each stage, will identify assets and strengths and gaps and needs of arts education countywide. The necessity for assessment rose as precedence in moving forward for impactful advocacy and planning of arts education. A Steering Committee was tasked with developing guidelines and drafting the framework for assessment (Phase 1 Research).

Arts Education Master Plan

The Napa Valley Unified School District (NVUSD) Arts Education Master Plan (AEMP) is a five-year, visual and performing arts initiative to provide opportunity, access and equity to all students, TK-12. The AEMP is the framework for this transformational public school district and private community partnership to continue collaboration with the design and support of an expanded sequential and standards-based, TK-12 curriculum in the disciplines of instrumental music, choral music, visual arts, theatre, dance and media arts. All instruction will be supported by relevant professional development and monitored by eff ective assessments and evaluations. The AEMP is in alignment with, and supports, the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP).

History & Supporters

Almost four years in the making, The Arts Education Master Plan was inspired by Arts Council Napa Valley’s vision for countywide arts education access. In 2013 Arts Council Napa Valley created the ACNV Education Alliance to assess the state of arts education in Napa County. The public-private alliance is made up of educators, students, arts administrators and community volunteers who worked tirelessly to understand the local arts education landscape and identify gaps that needed to be addressed.

In the fall of 2015, a $50,000 grant from Alliance partner Festival Napa Valley propelled the ACNV, the Education Alliance partners, and NVUSD to commission the Arts Education Master Plan, which presents a comprehensive framework for the development of the TK-12 sequential, standards-based arts education curriculum. In May of this year, NVUSD Superintendent Dr. Patrick Sweeney announced the appointment of Chuck Neidhoefer as the Visual & Performing Arts Coordinator (VAPA Coordinator). This new administrative position is being co-funded through a pledge to raise $150,000 over three years by ACNV, Festival Napa Valley, Napa Valley Education Foundation and other Ed Alliance partners. Neidhoefer will oversee a team of arts educators to design the curriculum during the 2016/2017 school year. For the first time, NVUSD will have a point person to lead the charge on sustaining and growing arts education opportunities for all students.
