The Kennedy Center is accepting nominations for the 2015 Kennedy Center/Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Awards. With over $500,000 in awards available, this series of annual $10,000 grants recognizes inspiring teachers across the United States. The awards were created in honor of Stephen Sondheim’s 80th birthday and were initiated and funded through the support of Freddie and Myrna Gershon. Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim frequently attributes his success to the teachers in his life. The Kennedy Center/Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Awards are presented each year on Sondheim’s birthday – March 22 – to a handful of teachers, kindergarten through college, who are nominated via the Kennedy Center website. In your video lessons, Gary will discuss how the human brain recognizes people based on large shapes and patterns, rather than the detail of their features. Once you understand the human face as abstract puzzle pieces rather than individual features, you’ll create a simple block-in to quickly replicate your subject’s resemblance.
Together, you’ll create “placeholders” for each feature, so that you understand their position, size, and shape in regard to each other, then bring your portrait to life with Gary’s tips for sketching facial features, taking special care with the eyes — the most challenging area to duplicate. Finally, six models will sit for you as you become comfortable picking out distinctive facial shapes and recreating their one-of-a-kind features in your own portraits.
